I just found it's linked to from here: http://www.wikisym.org/ws2008/index.php/WikiTracer:_mapping_the_wikisphere (a link back in the references might be useful and clarify more of the context for this page). That makes this page public enough.

And how are you going to accomplish agreement on the first version of the specs without actually involving the development teams of wiki engines? The page that links here says "We need to hear from you" - the way that is formulated does not limit it to team leads or only those present at WikiSym. It does sound like "general public" to the extent they are interested enough to actually want to contribute.

If you want to provide a useful (commercial?) service, I would urge you to actually involve the potential audience for that service - starting with development teams, but ultimately (soon) wiki admins, too.

This sounds too "lteral" to me, abstract it and you'll find more commonality, I'm sure. And you don't need data that is shared by all - just shared by some.

By JavaWoman: Well, if it's not a service /yet/ why not edit the page to reflect that fact. It's highly confusing (for those who do have access to this wiki) to read "WikiTrace is a service" when it's not even designed yet. Say what it is (not yet) and how people can actually contribute.

I assume this wiki will be at least "accessible" to as members of teh respective wiki development teams.

By DarTar: This page, as I mentioned before, is not indexed yet by search engines and is not meant to be consumed by the general public yet.

Before the service can be launched (which means defining the DB layout), the specifications must be defined. This is a process for which we wish to have the largest possible feedback from the wiki developer community.

So, bear with us until there is an agreement on the first version of the specs so we can actually start offering the service much as we do for Flickr groups.

By DarTar: At the moment, this refers to "page edits" as this is the only notion of an edit I know that is shared by all wikis. "Comments edits" are already taken into account by the content > comments field (assuming that comment editing is not allowed, to be checked on a per-engine basis). Same for "file edits" but I'm happy to add this if there's sufficient support from different engines.

By DarTar: The point is whether this data is logged and can be pulled from the wiki. It'd be great to add new moderation-related data but they'd need to be: (1) computable and (2) supported by a sufficient number of engines.

By JavaWoman: Currently available plugins links WikkaWiki to the WikkaWiki home page; searching reveals nothing mentioning "WikiTracer". If a plugin really exists, where is it?

Does the WikiTracer service even exist yet, or is it merely planned? I can find some proposed data formats, but no description of an actual API (RESTful or not) either.

It's all a great idea, but I see no practical information on where to go from here or what to do to implement this for my wiki, or how/where to register as a wiki owner.

By JavaWoman: The response XML format could be considerably improved by not putting *content* in the response into *attributes*: a logically better design would put them as actual data elements as children of the parent they are now an attribute of.

This would also enable an alternative response format as JSON data.

(It would also help if this comment form didn't "lose" the page content it is a comment for - being able to refer to content you are commenting on is essential, imo.)
